Barely Normal highlights unexpected places to stay, drink and explore in Cape Town.
Hi, I’m Luke — the person behind Barely Normal.
Blues player, pixel-slinger, food nerd. I’m happiest when I’m working through a concept with a glass of wine in hand, whether that’s in the kitchen, on a wine farm, or at a bar I probably shouldn’t have found but absolutely had to tell someone about.
Barely Normal started as a place to document the things in Cape Town that felt worth documenting — not the obvious stuff, but the unexpected. A distillery tucked into an industrial park. A guesthouse that somehow nails every detail. A dish that makes no sense on paper but complete sense on the plate.
Somewhere along the way, people started reading. About 40,000–50,000 of them every month now, finding their way here through Google and sticking around.
The focus is on three things: places to stay in and around Cape Town, food, wine and spirits, and experiences worth leaving the house for.
Working together
I work with a small number of brands, properties, and producers each quarter — the kind that fit what this blog has always been about. If you’re in the accommodation, food, wine, spirits, or experiences space in the Cape, I’d love to hear from you.
What that looks like in practice: a dedicated review post, honest and editorial in tone, optimised for search, and amplified to the Barely Normal audience. I only cover things I’d genuinely recommend, which is what makes a recommendation here mean something.
A note on transparency: I always disclose when I’ve been hosted or gifted a product. It’s not just policy — it’s what keeps this worth reading.
